ArtHouse is a new model of student housing developed for the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon. Situated within an urban campus, this 6-story residential building links the artistic life of the student community to the neighboring historic North Park blocks through spaces and experiences that encourage interaction and dialogue. First year students gravitate towards the open ground floor with a lobby that doubles as a gallery and event space with access to a community lounge, outdoor rain garden and covered bike storage. Two retail shops, also located on the ground floor include an arts themed café with rotating exhibits, poetry readings and community events. On-site management and a guest suite are also located on this level. The public ground floor spaces all visually connect to the street and park beyond.
Each of the 50 fully furnished apartments are designed to maximize day lighting and views. The units are conceived as day lit volumes with generous windows and careful placement of services to maximize available wall space. The residential corridors are brought to the edge of the building, allowing light and views into the circulation spaces that also serve as student galleries.
