The first airport in the region will be built in the picturesque resort of Arkhyz. It will allow tourists from around the world to reach the resorts of Arkhyz, Dombay, and the Elbrus region — renowned for their mountain landscapes and unique nature — with greater comfort and significantly reduced travel time.
Architectural Concept
The inspiration for the new terminal's image comes from Arkhyz's rich nature: forested foothills, ancient fir forests, the distinctive shapes of mountain lakes and hills covered with meadow flowers, and the graceful outline of fir seeds.
The triangular form of the building with softly rounded corners is inspired by the silhouette of fir seeds — a symbol of natural continuity and growth. This biomorphic geometry creates a distinct yet subtle identity, allowing the building to harmoniously blend into its surroundings.
Green Roof and Continuous Landscape
The building is integrated into the landscape by its green roof, which will become one of the largest installations of its kind in Russia. At the boundary between interior and exterior spaces, a hill will be created: one part of it gently integrates into the entrance group composition, while the second part becomes an intimate focal point of the waiting area, planted with young fir trees.
The hill is conceived as an extension of natural imagery — its silhouette is calibrated to the lines of the foothills, appearing to flow into neighboring slopes through optical transition, gradually dissolving into the distant vistas of Arkhyz.
Needle‑like Columns: Structure and Plasticity
The canopy and the entire terminal roof are supported by clusters of columns with wooden finishes reminiscent of fir needles. Gathered together, they create a rhythmic sequence that defines scale and atmosphere within the space.
Expansive glass surfaces frame panoramic mountain views, blurring the boundary between interior and exterior. At the heart of the terminal lies a green inner courtyard-atrium — a space that brings daylight and seasonal changes into the passengers' journey.
Construction of Arkhyz Airport is scheduled for completion in 2029. Beyond its functional role, the terminal serves as a symbolic threshold — a point of transition between urban life and the vast expanses of the Caucasus Mountains. By improving access to tourist destinations, the project catalyzes regional development while carefully preserving the unique character of the place.
