Without the luxury of knocking down walls and reconfiguring rooms, how can one create a different and distinct spatial experience within an apartment unit?
How can one rethink, reuse and refresh what already exists in the space without retaining the old aesthetic?
How does one sidestep thematic design trends and instead, place focus purely on a response to functional requirements? Form then follows function. The client for this is, after all, the designer herself.
Having already lived in this apartment for over ten years, the client-designer examined these questions when it became a necessity to renovate. Through scrutinising her own lifestyle and deliberating practical requirements required for day to day living, items in the home were distilled down to the essentials, reinterpreted and addressed via the insertion of customised furniture. This included the retention and refurbishing of existing items in the apartment, such as built-in cabinetry and the solid timber dining table. Not only did this par down need for new furniture, but it also gave the designer an opportunity to consider how sustainability can incorporated through the renovation process, even at such a small scale.
