The intervened apartment is placed in a building from the 30’s in Bairro das Colónias neighborhood in Lisbon. The kitchen and bathroom were much degraded and the existing partitioning didn’t answer the owner’s pretensions. There were also some cracked or even missing stuccoes. Besides an existing arch opening in the living-room, this was placed in the middle of the floor plan, putting apart the two bedrooms. The arch was closed in our intervention, returning to the original partitioning, and the living-room was replaced closer to the kitchen compartment, benefiting still from a double French window with a balcony, thus obtaining a bigger natural lighting. As for improving natural lighting in the bedrooms still, a new bedroom by the front façade was designed, moving the closet to a former bedroom facing the rear elevation. To assure an independent access to the bedrooms a second corridor next to the centre bedroom was designed. To reclaim some of the space conceded to this corridor the bed was placed above it in mezzanine which can be accessed by a wardrobe/bookcase where the stair is placed in the continuity of the shelves. In the living room, a back-lit suspended bookcase was designed, loose from the floor and from the ceiling. The existing decorated ceilings were all renovated as well as the staves, frames, skirting and flooring, thus giving back nobleness to the main areas. As for the kitchen and bathroom, totally coated in cement, a more relaxed atmosphere was created, but contemporary, simple and clean. In the bathroom, some elements were inverted, the bath tub was replaced by a large shower tray, a big countertop with washbasin on was designed and the bide was removed, thus improving the use of the total space.
