Located in Southern Pattaya, Thailand, Andaz Pattaya is a successful demonstration of developing resort property with harmonious respect for the existing ecology of the site. The master planning was set with the efforts to preserve the existing heritage of the site, a cluster of Thai vernacular houses, and the precious trees planted from sprouts by the owner since 1960. It establishes true sustainability in aspects of design, operation, and business.
Rooted in a deep respect for place, the design embraces sustainability through sensitive site integration and the preservation of heritage trees. The layout was carefully planned to avoid existing trees, allowing the landscape to guide the spatial experience from arrival to the beach. Prominent native trees serve as nodes providing varying mood and space as elements of Pattaya’s local charms and crafts complement individual characters of the heritages trees. By using local plant species, they created a self-sustaining landscape that support resilience in many seasons, bind the soil together and preventing water erosion.
Thai vernacular houses, with timber terraces, waterfront stairways, and stilted structures, are seamlessly woven into the architecture using locally sourced materials. A small stream collects rainwater, supports surface drainage, and reduces irrigation needs. The planting palette promotes resilience and minimizes soil erosion, ensuring the landscape thrives across seasons.
Every design decision honors the client’s affection for the land, offering guests a tranquil retreat where they can indulge in the aroma of local hospitality and reconnect with themselves and nature.
