Located in Madrid’s Jerónimos district, just a few steps from El Retiro Park, AM11 is the comprehensive renovation of an urban apartment conceived as a calm and light-filled retreat within the city. The project transforms the existing layout into a more open, flexible, and contemporary living environment, where natural light, spatial continuity, and carefully selected materials define the character of the home.
The intervention sought to establish a stronger relationship between the interior and its surroundings, drawing inspiration from the proximity of El Retiro as a place of calm within Madrid’s dense urban fabric. Rather than introducing dramatic gestures, the design focuses on enhancing the everyday living experience through a clear spatial organization and a restrained material palette.
The original compartmentalized layout was reconfigured to create fluid connections between the living, dining, and kitchen areas, allowing daylight to penetrate deep into the apartment while reinforcing visual continuity throughout the main spaces. The resulting plan provides greater flexibility and adaptability, responding to different ways of inhabiting the home.
Materiality plays a central role in the project. A palette of warm neutral tones, natural finishes, and bespoke joinery creates a cohesive interior where each element contributes to a sense of permanence and balance. Architectural details have been carefully integrated to reduce visual clutter, allowing the spaces themselves to become the main protagonists.
The private areas continue the same architectural language established in the shared spaces. Three bedrooms have been designed around principles of simplicity, comfort, and continuity, combining integrated storage solutions, soft textures, and natural materials to create calm and intimate environments.
Particular attention was given to the living room, conceived as the social heart of the apartment and as a versatile space capable of accommodating different activities throughout the day. Cream and sand tones are complemented by custom paneled millwork, introducing depth, rhythm, and texture while reinforcing the project's understated character.
Rather than relying on formal complexity, AM11 demonstrates how proportion, light, materiality, and carefully considered detailing can redefine an existing apartment, creating a contemporary home that balances functionality, warmth, and spatial clarity.
