Founded in 2021 by philanthropist Alice Walton, Alice L. Walton School of Medicine (AWSOM) is located in the Crystal Bridges campus, and offers a four-year medical degree program that builds on conventional medicine with a compassionate, inclusive, and whole health approach to care. OSD's design for the 14-acre site and rooftop park is an invitation to both students and the community, and showcases the principles of wellness in the form of a physically active and healthy environment that nourishes mind, body, spirit, and ecology. Conceived as a geologic bluff inspired by the nearby Crystal Bridges springs and ravines, the site proposes a network of trails for walking and biking, a teaching farm, healing gardens, outdoor classrooms, urban farming space, a hill climb, and rooftop balconies for rest and relaxation. In this way, the site combines health, learning, and art to become a living example of a new form of whole health care for both people and the environment.
