Vehicle hall and fire station: one does not work without the other, yet their individual requirements demand two different designs.

Good tools, a big heart and bravery: today more than ever a well-functioning volunteer fire brigade is the finely tuned interaction of equipment, machines, and vehicles on the one hand and experienced observation, teamwork, and motivation on the other. The right technical equipment and specific skills come together and allow the volunteers to fulfil their purpose: provide help and security for the people in the village.
Vehicle dimensions and human proportions: the project includes new spaces for both the technical equipment and the volunteer firefighters. The unique requirements for the vehicles and the firefighters, thus the consideration of vehicle dimensions and human proportions, played an essential role in the creation of the spatial program. A fire engine needs space, lots of space: and height, lots of height. It not only needs protection from the elements but also storage space for its equipment and additional space for maintenance. Meanwhile, a room height between 2.5 – 3m is sufficient for people, in addition the fire station should be warm and inviting, with private spaces as well as areas with a lot of natural light and a view onto its surroundings.
Vehicle hall and fire station: different requirements need different spatial solutions. The vehicle hall is kept in dark tones, with the facade clad in dark metal panels. The accentuated gates and a ribbon window on the north side of the building, provide a glimpse into the realm of the firefighters and their vehicles. The fire station, in contrast, has a plaster facade with clearly cut openings and a main entrance on the west side. It not only covers the needs of the individual firefighter but also of the whole team: clear accessibility, functional changing rooms, a comfortable lounge area and a spacious training room with a view onto the vehicle hall.
