Architect of Record: WGD Architects
Owner: City of Toronto
The project presents a major transformation of this City of Toronto community building. New spacious vestibule with sliding doors, large glazing and welcoming canopy bring natural light to a new lobby leading to the arena. New insulated glass sliding doors and screens separate the ice rink from the adjacent common spaces. Other elements include fully transformed and accessible change rooms, community lounge, staff office and zamboni room extension. The ice rink exterior metal siding was replaced with new insulated metal panels. An existing chimney was transformed into a colourful marker, a distant reminder of a totem pole, to celebrate this diverse community. The project includes also significant upgrades to the mechanical and electrical engineering systems, as well as to the building structure. The facility became one of the most accessible community buildings in Toronto, and has been promoted as a model for future renovations and upgrades of similar City of Toronto facilities.
