Al Riyah Palace, located in the exclusive district of Al Bateen in Abu Dhabi, is conceived as a contemporary interpretation of Arabian palatial architecture shaped by wind, light, and silence. Named after the Arabic word for “winds”, the project explores the boundary between architecture and sculpture, translating the invisible forces of the desert into a built form. The palace emerges as a fluid and organic composition, where monumentality is softened by movement and refinement.
The façade is defined by a series of vertical sculptural elements inspired by wind-shaped sand formations, creating a dynamic rhythm that filters light and generates a constantly evolving play of shadows throughout the day. These twisted columns, both structural and expressive, give the building a strong identity while reinforcing its connection to the surrounding landscape. Large arched glazing introduces transparency and openness, establishing a dialogue between interior and exterior while maintaining a sense of architectural depth and protection. A central reflecting pool organizes the main axis of the project, referencing the spatial order of traditional Persian and Arabian palaces and reinforcing a sense of calm, symmetry, and timelessness.
The approach to the palace is conceived as a gradual architectural sequence, where a curved pathway reveals the project progressively, offering changing perspectives of the façade. The architecture is experienced as a living composition, where each column expands organically from ground to roof, creating a continuous interplay of tension, depth, and rhythm.
Inside, the palace unfolds as a serene and immersive environment defined by fluid spaces and controlled light. A double-height entrance lobby is organized around a sculptural central staircase, acting as the spatial anchor of the project, while parametric ceiling surfaces and indirect lighting enhance the sense of continuity and calm. Each room is shaped with soft geometries, balancing minimalism with a rich sensory experience. The master suite features a custom-designed headboard inspired by wind-formed natural elements, reinforcing the conceptual narrative of the project.
Throughout the palace, space, light, and silence are carefully orchestrated to create a refined architectural atmosphere, where structure, materiality, and experience merge into a unified and timeless composition.
