Pedestrian Bridge was designed for the UNESCO Heritage site, Africatown (in Mobile, Alabama). It has cultural heritage significance as it marks the location where young enslaved people abducted from Benin on the Clotilda ship created their own thriving community. The bridge allows pedestrians to cross the busy Bay Bridge Road. It serves as a symbolic gate to the city of Africatown. This structure of utility is clad with history. The bridge panel includes 'welcome' and 'hello' in several African languages like Fon, Yoruba, Twi and Lingala. The rustic and faceted quality alludes to the history of Africa and establishes this piece of infrastructure as a monument for diasporan connections between the United States of America and Africa.
