The Africatown Community Garden is a vibrant and transformative addition to the existing gardens, designed to strengthen community ties and address key local challenges. With an area of 7,500 square feet is is spacious and allows for many uses. This multi-purpose space integrates a farmers market for local vendors to sell artisanal goods, a Creek Club offering sustainable aquaponics education, and a meditation area for rejuvenation and reflection. Each element is carefully designed to flow cohesively, enticing visitors to explore and fostering a deeper appreciation for the space.
To combat food insecurity and the challenges of food deserts, the garden incorporates innovative solutions such as hydroponics and aquaponics. These sustainable methods grow plants and vegetables in media beds fertilized by fish waste, while the fish themselves can serve as an additional food source—creating a self-sustaining, closed-loop system that educates the community on eco-friendly practices. Locally sourced shipping containers are repurposed into market stalls, featuring perforated metal for ventilation and a unique aesthetic that reflects Africatown's creativity and resilience.
