Nowe Żerniki is a new residential district, still expanding on the outskirts of Wrocław, which was established as part of Wrocław ESK2016. An extraordinary undertaking is a joint work of architects, officials and investors who have made an attempt to develop an architectural and urban space concept in which life will simply be well. During more than two years of workshops - in which 40 best architects from Wrocław took part - both urban planning (which formed the basis for the Local Spatial Development Plan) and detailed architectural solutions covering both housing and public spaces and objects were developed. In the next stage, project teams undertook to develop projects for individual development plots.
The Atmosfera estate is one of the building complexes co-creating Nowe Żerniki. Ten intimate, bright, simple buildings with services on the ground floors have been designed so that the architecture would be a light background for the everyday life of the residents and the building of neighborly relations.
On the plot there are ten 3- and 4- story blocks with a total 116 flats, placed upon the green slope, slightly flowing down to the south and covering the lower level with garage and commercial premises. The size and structure of the buildings form a new typology – that despite high density enables to create small housing enclaves and provides the inhabitants a high-quality space, commonly associated with smaller dwellings. Public and semi-public spaces are placed in the courtyard above the basement level with access for inhabitants not only from the surrounding buildings but all of the Nowe Żerniki estate. The ground floor by the northern buildings contains large gardens and there is green public space with trees in the passage.
Because of the social and economic profile of the estate, most of the flats are of 45-48m2 area and are easily modifiable to fulfill future requirements of users.
Despite relatively small budget and realization limits, the estate succeeded in creating a cozy, comfortable, and social space for all of the inhabitants which was the initial idea of Nowe Żerniki as the new model estate.
The project nominated individually for EU Mies Van der Rohe Award 2019 and - as a part of the whole housing estate Nowe Żerniki - for EU Mies Van der Rohe Award 2022
