Adiuvat is a local Roastery Coffee brand based in Quy Nhon City, Binh Dinh Province, Vietnam. With a sustainable business philosophy that promotes responsible coffee cultivation, Adiuvat maintains control over the entire process—from growing the coffee plants to delivering the final brewed cup. Based on the core business philosophy shared by both parties, the Studio proposed a design approach that emphasizes form composition, proportion, and materials sourced and crafted by local artisans. The materials themselves are minimally treated to preserve their aesthetic integrity, thereby cultivating a distinctive atmosphere unique to the space.
The main challenge presented by the client was to integrate a living space with a coffee roastery. The solution, conceived by A+H Architects, was to use a Brutalism style, featuring miscellaneous storey and an interconnected spatial design through a central skylight extending from the ground floor.
The living area is arranged separately on the two upper floors of the back block of the building, ensuring privacy and quiet. In contrast, the ground floor and the front space with a height of 4.2m each and facing the street make the space of the coffee shop airy, as well as ensuring the slope of the roof.
A+H Architect want to bring out the natural beauty of original materials, such as brick walls (bricks produced in local factory) , terrazzo floors, and wood (local craftsman), to balance cost efficiency with aesthetic appeal. Glass was used throughout the structure plays an important role in connecting spaces, maximizing natural light, create a sense of spaciousness and connection.
The most attractive point in the construction and design of this project is the use of 16.000 Concrete Masonry Units (CMUs) produced in local factory near. Since the year 2000 in Viet Nam, the government has restricted the use of baked bricks because the emissions from baking processing have a negative impact on the environment.
Therefore, CMUs have become an effective solution. However, only in recent years have CMUs been put into use in civil works because of many disadvantages such as: low finishing quality, not aesthetically pleasing, causing wall cracks after a period of time, ... and when testing and applying it to the construction of this project, A+H Architect has found a solution to use CMUs without using finishing mortar to create a unique part of this project, enhancing the beauty of the bricks, creating a highlight for the house.
In the end, the architect and the customer agreed to use mosaic tiles and traditional tile roofs. This choice brings a harmonious combination of tradition and modernity.
