Biotechnology companies such as Acorda Therapeutics have changed the landscape of available therapies for patients. BAM Architecture Studio changed the environmental landscape for Acorda Therapeutics, and landlord, BioMed Realty Trust, Inc., to re-envision the interior and exterior of Ardsley Park, creating a 140,000-square-foot headquarters and research complex that has allowed Acorda to focus on what it does best – innovating therapies.
To accomplish the creative vision of generating a collective feel in terms of both bringing people together and connecting the separate building elements on the campus, BAM created two flexible spaces. A “town square” connector bridge links two existing buildings, and a landscaped pedestrian Main Street creates a strong circulatory pathway between the four main buildings. These two interventions transformed the campus into a vitalized, collaborative environment.
The new connector building grew out of a need to create a large, contiguous floor plate suitable for a growing pharmaceutical company. More than a building, it is now a forum and vital connection hub for Acorda. It serves as a place of communication, forging connections via a range of gathering spaces for informal and formal discussions. The space blends the work environment with the collaborative, incorporating a café, conference room, flexible event spaces, and loading dock, with Main Street's plaza off its entrance.
Natural light was a major consideration in BAM's design, where a double-height space takes advantage of the expanse of glass on which statements of confidence and motivation are prominently displayed in large letters. The glazing allows light to flow into this space of movement, communication, and progress, casting its statements of positivity inside. These windows are Acorda's welcome greeting to visitors and employees alike, furthering Acorda's idea that scientific research does not happen separate from the world, but as part of it.
