This pediatric clinic in Athens was designed to combine multiple functions within a limited 69 m² footprint, while responding to the pediatrician’s wish to create a welcoming, familiar environment for children and their families. The aim was to transform a doctor’s visit into a positive experience, where play, curiosity, and a sense of security prevail.
The architectural concept draws inspiration from the vitality of nature and the spirit of exploration, with the forest and the starry sky serving as its central narrative elements. The linear geometry of the site, with natural light entering from an elongated façade, determined the organization of the program: waiting area, reception, and examination room were all arranged along this luminous side, maximizing daylight.
The layout ensures distinct functional zones without disrupting flow. The examination room is positioned at the back, directly connected to a quiet space for privacy and breastfeeding, while the remaining functions are organized into an open-plan system that encourages movement and interaction.
The entrance and waiting area were conceived as a dynamic “playground landscape.” Movable seating elements with curved, organic forms function simultaneously as furniture and playful objects, inviting children to climb, explore, and engage. The design fosters informal communication among parents and turns waiting into part of the overall experience rather than a pause from it.
The floor, in warm wood tones, acts as a unifying canvas, while variations in material and color subtly distinguish different zones. Curved geometries in flooring, surfaces, and partitions soften transitions and enhance a sense of fluidity and protection, echoing archetypal organic forms such as the womb.
A layered architectural mural at the entrance—green surfaces paired with natural oak—abstractly resembles a forest. More than a decorative gesture, it integrates storage and hidden doors leading to the private areas. Custom wooden alcoves provide cozy nooks for children to pause, observe, or play quietly, reinforcing the atmosphere of intimacy and shelter.
Lighting plays a central role in the experience. Circular recessed fixtures of varying size and arrangement create the impression of a starry sky. The light is soft, indirect, and diffused—reminiscent of sunlight filtering through a forest canopy—avoiding harsh glare and cultivating a calming ambiance.
In the examination room, continuity of materials and colors from the waiting area maintains coherence, while a thematic wallpaper with a delicate forest motif and animal illustrations offers visual comfort and sparks imagination.
Every design decision—from the reception desk’s soft curve to the sculptural ceiling details—works together to shift the clinic away from the sterile character of a medical institution. The pediatric clinic is reimagined as a retreat: a place where nature, play, and architecture converge to provide care, safety, and inspiration.
