The lobby contains a rare Hans Hofmann mosaic mural. Hofmann, a mid-century abstract artist, was a great believer in the synergy of art and architecture. In 1950 he took part in an exhibition curated by Samuel Kootz which paired a modernist mural artist with a modernist architect. Hofmann was paired with Latin American Luis Sert, a protégé of Le Corbusier who went on to become the dean of Harvard’s Graduate School of Design. As a result of the exhibit, art collector and developer William Kaufman commissioned Hofmann to work with Swiss architect William Lescaze on 711 Third Avenue, completed in 1955.
