The SIX awards and exhibition are a part of
ACCESS-to-Architecture, a national programme of events and activities
that bring the aims of the Scottish Executive's Policy on Architecture
for Scotland to a wider audience across Scotland. SIX 07 features work
from the future stars of Scottish architecture. A showcase of young
talent, the exhibition offers a rare opportunity to see work from all
six of Scotland's Schools of Architecture together. Student
work, often only seen on a wall for a few days and rarely built is
temporary by nature. The SIX 07 exhibition aims to give a sense of
importance and permanence to the work through the use of digital media
and references to protective archiving systems. Where traditionally
student work is presented on gallery walls, each schools work is
presented centrally within six highly polished storage units. On the top
surface of these units images of the work are projected in an
interactive format for easy browsing by the viewer. The content here
matches that presented on the six website. Hard ‘archived' copies of the
work are stored in six sliding drawers, each with a projecting tab
providing information on the particular student and their award
nomination. The pieces are intended to be highly interactive and their
positioning in the centre of the gallery encourages interactions and
discussion between audience members. The combination of interactive
flash projections on the top of the box and traditional prints of the
work stored in the drawers ensures that the work is accessible to a
broad section of exhibition viewers. Each box can be dismantled into a
series of components suitable for transport to the six schools of
architecture throughout Scotland. The exhibition was commended in the
Best Exhibition category at the Scottish Design Awards in 2008.
