Originally constructed in 1898 and designated a heritage building by the City of Toronto, 60 Atlantic was sold to Hullmark Developments, who were looking to change the function and nature of the entire site. Quadrangle’s redesign began by paring the building to its basic elements. A glass-clad addition, sectioned by corten steel fins, was added to the north side of the building to further free the interior spaces and showcase the beauty of the structure. The fins descend into a surrounding sunken landscape that serves as courtyard and patio, and gives the former basement above-grade light quality. New openings in the south and west side of the building relate to historical openings and actively integrate the building into the streetscape. When viewed from outside, the corten and contrasting brick of the newly renovated exterior hint at the dynamic, multilevel interior, where the open floorplates allow for flexible planning by various tenants. Including a third level, the building’s square footage increases to over 40,000, marking the address as a focal point of the burgeoning development’s commercial centre.
