5th Avenue Apartment

New York, NY, United States

YEAR
2008
BUDGET
$1M - 5M
This 2500-square-foot pied-a-terre
occupies a full floor in the tower of the iconic Sherry-Netherland Hotel on Fifth Avenue.  Designed in collaboration with Rose Tarlow
?Melrose House, the design transforms the original layout to maximize the extraordinary
light and views that are offered by its location at the southeast corner of
Central Park. A carefully selected palette of materials, together with clean modern
detailing re-interprets the landmark building?s refined elegance to create a
contemporary dwelling that retains the warmth of its surrounding
environment.

The apartment is entered
through a set of louvered Anegre wood and glass door panels that enclose the
elevator vestibule and establish a formal threshold.  This spatial layering provides a sense of
privacy to the interior while allowing natural light to penetrate to the core.  Immediately through the door is a grand open space
which extends the length of the tower along Fifth Avenue and is unified by a
custom Anegre wood bookcase that exhibits an extraordinary collection of art
objects.  What had been a compartment of
3 individual rooms has been transformed into an expansive, flowing space that contains
a living area, a less formal seating area with a retractable TV, and a dining
area adjacent to the open kitchen.  Expansive
integral-colored plaster walls flanking the long sides of the space allow for
the display of art and extended panoramic views of the park.

This common area links two
private zones located on opposite sides of the elevator core.  To the north a corridor gallery leads to the
office, service entrance, and guest suite; to the south, positioned to maximize
daylight, is the master suite with two full baths.

This project exemplifies the
application of RM&P?s celebrated design approach to an urban residence.  An open floor plan and raised ceilings
liberate the light and views offered by the project?s prime location and achieve
the implied lightness of its tower elevation.
This design provides a remarkable modern setting in which to exhibit the
owners? world class art collection but also provides the ultimate in luxury and
comfort.
