“The Floating Garden House For The Senior”
This three-storey residence, located in Rama 9, Bangkok, is built on a compact 70-square-wah plot within a dense urban fabric. The vertical stacking of spaces responds to the limited land area, while enlarged cantilevered balconies create alternating garden terraces on each level. These outdoor extensions allow the residents to cultivate small gardens despite the restricted site, while also serving as passive shading devices for the tropical climate. The wide roof overhangs and aluminium lattice screens provide ventilation, daylight control, and privacy, creating a comfortable living environment suited to Bangkok’s heat and humidity.
The interiors are designed with senior living in mind—simple layouts, unobstructed circulation, and seamless indoor-outdoor connections. Each storey maintains direct access to greenery, encouraging daily interaction with plants and natural light. In harmony with the architecture’s sustainable ethos, the interior embraces adaptive reuse of furniture: old tables and chairs are retained, while the family’s bed is carefully repaired and reintroduced for continued use. This blend of modern architectural clarity with the patina of familiar, time-worn furniture creates a home that is both functional and emotionally rooted.
On a limited Bangkok plot, this house demonstrates how tropical architecture and interior design can foster well-being for senior living. By layering garden balconies and reusing existing furniture, the project balances practicality, sustainability, and a personal connection to memory and nature.
