International Residence

20th Century Fox

Located on the edge of the 20th Century Fox Studios historical district, this new four-story office building effectively stitches together the old intent of the 1900’s lot with the new working-portion of the campus. The parti for the building draws from these two divergent starting points, past and present, and creates a classic head and body scheme. The head portion directly relates to the Old Writer’s Court, and is of a diminutive scale appropriate to this side of the lot. The body portion draws from the working side of the lot, with its large-scale, geometric sound stages. A glass entry, located on the axis of Second Street, pays homage to the studio’s past while the serpentine balcony bridges it to the present (i.e. the studio lot). Aesthetically, the project draws from the Bauhaus era, prevalent across the lot, but brings the ideals of the movement into the current era. Flat-colored interior walls, simple geometric shapes, ribbon windows, and white plaster further emphasize the modern rendering of the project.

Materially, the project uses smooth steel-troweled plaster, linear bricks, steel pipe rails, and a simple storefront to emphasize the clean Bauhaus intent. In the end, the new Building 310 effectively ties the divergent workings of the lot through careful planning.
