1998 Second Avenue is a ground up residential and commercial building designed to serve the changing East Harlem neighborhood. The 12-story building has 164 residential units, and the ground floor is anticipated to contain a medical clinic adjunct to nearby Mt Sinai Medical Complex.
Conceived as a self-contained community, 1998 Second Avenue has extensive amenity areas to augment each individual apartment. These amenity spaces include a rooftop pool with outdoor recreation areas, a large lounge that opens onto the pool area with an outdoor media screen, a media room, a commercial size gym and separate work areas to accommodate the growing need for WFH spaces. Expansive views to the RFK Bridge and the 3rd Avenue Bridge connect the building to its neighborhood.
The brick façade, with a prominent cornice and exposed steel details, alludes to industrial buildings of the past and was inspired by the loft buildings of Williamsburg and Tribeca as a contrast to typical glass and steel contemporary buildings. Large windows punctuate the façade, breaking up the mass and allowing for light filled interiors. Accent brick on the masonry piers, curved building corners and decorative charcoal colored window grilles reinforce the allusion to the 19th century building type.
