TRA: Latin for ahead of, or in the midst of things; simultaneously the edge and the link to beyond TRA: Latin for ahead of, or in the midst of things; simultaneously the edge and the link to beyond. TRA studio is the New York and Venice based firm led by Caterina Roiatti, AIA, and Robert Traboscia. TRA explores TRAnsdiciplinarity, finding the equilibrium between art and design, cultural and functional constraints, uncovering opportunities for innovative, interventions, “above-below-in between and within” the urban built environment, TRA Studio’s experimental and holistic attitude searches for the balance between the operational and conceptual space, developing environments that are TRAnsformational, unforgettable yet performative, remaining always, site-specific and responsive to the current conditions. Our work spans a wide range of projects, including new construction, modular challenging buildings, additions, adaptive re-use, contemporary restorations and interiors. Since 1995, the firm has worked with leading cultural Institutions, art foundations, global corporations, international fashion labels, nonprofit organizations as well as developers and private clients. TRA strives to achieve built design that is coherent, concise and meaningful, obtaining exTRAordinary results with minimum consumption. We use computation not to enhance image, but materiality, our studio is not a “shop”, rather, we know how to build; we see the execution as part of the design, in the pursuit of technical achievement as well as enduring beauty, as proven in the longevity and resale value of our spaces. Our work always strives to TRAnscends expectations. TRA embraces the responsibility that comes with working in the Historic Districts, where the interventions will likely last and have a reaching effect on the city and its users; from interiors to new buildings the sum of the singular interventions, rise at the urban scale as part of the larger fabric, becoming neighborhood enhancing. TRA received the Regina Kellerman Award from the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation and was selected as a top finalist in the Grand Army Plaza Competition in 2008. TRA’s projects have been featured in several publications including the, New York Times, Architectural Record, the AIA Guide to New York City, 101 Cool Buildings: the best of New York City Architecture, Masterpieces: Roof Architecture+ Design, the Real Deal, New American Luxury and Design Bureau Magazine. exTRA: expanding our role, new modes of practice Our cohesive process operates in between the spaces of programming, planning, development, new construction, reuse ,preservation, interior design, art, branding and expediting, in one TRAnsdisciplinary studio, in the Italian tradition of “design is one”: we are system thinkers. Hands-on involvement throughout all phases by the principals insures end product quality. Our wide ranging collective knowledge also benefits from Robert Traboscia’s extensive experience in design-build and construction management. The following is not only description of the comprehensive single-source exTRA assistance. we offer, but also a statement of the way we work and of our commitment to the extended life of each project, as demonstrated by the projects’ timelines and continued collaboration with our clients for whom we remain trusted advisors. Besides the conventional boundaries of architecture, we provide an holistic outlook through the less than linear construction process, from pre-development to completed beautiful environments and their use. The studio's work is seamlessly integrated by the support of by TRA inc. , the Building, Zoning Law and Construction Management group. Predevelopment/Acquisition/ Leasing: identification of feasible opportunities, feasibility assessments and different scenarios to optimize return, reconciliation of goals with schedule and budget. Joint venture negotiations and work-letters Master Planning/ Project Phasing: we address the immediate needs as well as long-term goals, providing flexibility for future modifications Building Code, Zoning Evaluations, Expediting: we have extensive experience in working with the Community Boards, LPC, City Planning and BSA and provide experienced expediting, assisted also by the proximity of our studio to the City Agencies, we provide forensic investigations if needed Value Engineering: evaluation of cost-effective solutions, material optimization and estimating of multiple options, including less conventional modes of construction, such as mid-rise off-site modular Integrated Project Delivery/Design build/Construction Management our successful completed work and architect-led design build projects demonstrate our specialized project management skills. As construction managers we produced work on budget and on time, often meeting accelerated schedules Sustainable Design: use of geographic information systems to guide the design and evaluate the consequences of design decision . Innovative Restoration/Transformational Reuse/Contemporary Additions: we have extensive experience with the programmatic and technical issues inherent in the renovation, adaptive reuse of and addition to existing structures. We partner with LPC to negotiate the most appropriate and cost conscious solutions, our interventions demonstrate how the existing and the new can successfully work in symbiosis; the success for many of our projects relies on public consensus requiring extensive review and presentation, process for which we have extensive experience Interiors/Lighting/Furniture Design: our process informs the continuity of the envelope and the interiors, we build to last, both because of the timeless design as well as the careful execution and attention to detail. We are passionate about product design, mid-century furniture and art, weather we design it, produce it or select it. Post-Construction Reports: manuals for the best performance of the property and scenarios for different modes of use.We can provide the management with intelligent Revit building models. Experience Design/ Branding: Analysis, within an organization, of processes, services and procedures systems, to define and improve the relationships between the built environment and the user's experience. Creative Partnerships: we have worked as partners with other architects and artists and took the role executive architects for several successful projects, often for over-seas companies and clients. TRA/ART studio: The modernist promise of integrated art and architecture informs the continuity of our building envelopes and interiors in both new and historic buildings. The clarity of the diagrams and of the clarity of the architectural compositions echoes the Robert Traboscia’s minimal art gestures. The ART studio works in the architectural edges, finding the links and intersections between different dimensions, reinterpreting the common language between ART and architecture.
