We, as humans, want to belong somewhere—a place that is tangible and holds meaning. In the same way, architecture is a great medium to alter spaces and create a sense of belongingness for those who seek for it.
Our work at Terrenum Designs revolves around holistic design and sustainability. Meanwhile, humans' needs are always changing with time. To fulfil these needs, we seek to experiment with vernacular learning and computational techniques for an innovative outcome. In the process of creation, we focus on the use of locally sourced materials and utilize the waste generated from the site. All the purposeful structures that we make are lessons, and the teachings from the community are our education. Thus, preferring to adapt creatively and being fluid with our designs can make them withstand the test of time as we promote the wellness of a being. The purpose is limitless under the roof of our ecosystem, and while designing, we wish to connect with more people through our different mediums of expression.
Background –
Terrenum Designs, as an architectural initiative, began in 2021. While roaming through rural areas of Wayanad, Kerala, only to realize that traditional built forms were being replaced with lifeless structures, we were led to an on-ground understanding of many problems, ranging from the introduction of cheap concrete materials to an attraction towards up-to-the-minute designs without context. In response to these issues, we aim at strengthening the communities and helping them reinstate the need for passive designs, which can be made with their own technologies, context, skills, and materials, as well as integrating the new materials in the right amount with the amalgamation of local resources.
