We propose an architecture for the new low-capital, sustainability focused world – a world of places as opposed to objects and images. Some of our best work has been achieved on very low budgets incorporating built-in furniture, hidden panels, fused glass, lime renders and a range of natural timbers and stones. We try and apply this philosophy to all of our work regardless of size, type, or budget and believe that design with these values should be available to everyone.
Based in the University of Plymouths Formation Zone, the company provides research and design services for new residential, commercial and cultural projects, contemporary conversions, extensions, self-build projects, alterations to period properties and feasibility studies in Devon and Cornwall.
Our projects often have an interest in the relationship of built form with landscape to generate a sense of place and often include the collaboration and incorporation of work with specialised fabricators, craftspeople and respected artists in the region.
Research + Design were recently awarded CIATS Alan King Prize 2009 under the highly commended category for their New Street residential extension located in the Barbican in Plymouth. The project was also presented at Greenbuild Expo 2010 innovation showcase this year in Manchester and has recently been published in the October 2010 eco issue of Grand Designs Magazine.
