Maetherea is a multidisciplinary practice based in London founded by Cristina Morbi in 2018. Working internationally at the intersection of Public Art and Landscape Architecture, it couples time-based design with phenomena to create spaces that change through time.
Our projects are guided by ecological principles, considering the relationships among all living organisms, including humans, and their physical environment. Our work unifies performances of the matter with natural and artificial phenomena.
We drive our inspirations from a multidisciplinary perspective, merging rituals to perception and interactive installation triggered by nature. In this way, we create a performative environment where the landscape acts as a theatre and nature as the actor.
Our projects and installations work on the interaction between humans and nature, continuously evolving in new scenarios. They are ecological and phenological devices, becoming tools to explore the environment and interact with it.
‘Places are poetic. They grow and change, influenced and inspired by the bodies inhabiting them.
Because of this, our work is interactive. It is made to approach, touch, shaped by nature and the forces engaging with it.
Actions change our sculptures, triggering light, sounds, and echoes. Rain, wind, sunlight, and each unpredictable interaction create a new landscape of performative responses.
In this way, we make the works, but they are completed by the community and the nature they come into contact with.
This creates a symbiosis between art and its environment.’
