Karel Filsak was born in 1985, in a family with a strong tradition in architecture. From 2005 to 2013 he studied at
the Czech Technical University’s Faculty of Architecture in Prague, graduating in Zdeněk Rothbauer’s studio,
where he would later work as an assistant (2016–2022). In 2022 he and Vojtěch Sosna (from Atelier Bod
Architects) took over from Rothbauer to head the studio. In his architecture projects Karel Filsak draws on the
legacy of a number of prominent Czech brutalist architects: besides Rothbauer they include his grandfather Karel
Filsak, Jan Bočan and Alena Šrámková. After several years of employment and teaching, as well as entering
public competitions, in 2021 he founded his own studio, Karel Filsak Architects, focusing primarily on designing
public buildings (with the emphasis on their functional layouts), sensitive reconstructions of historic buildings, and
street furniture, where architecture meets sculpture. His studio also collaborates with fellow architects and
construction specialists. Karel Filsak Architects has been highly placed in dozens of public architecture
competitions in Czechia.
