Gilbane Building Company was founded in Providence, Rhode Island, beginning as a humble carpentry business. Initially owned by William Gilbane, he eventually took on his brother, Thomas F. Gilbane, as an apprentice carpenter. Soon the two brothers, along with William H. Gilbane, founded Gilbane Building Company in 1870.
Over the course of its 150 year tenure within the construction industry, Gilbane Building Company has dedicated itself to quality craftsmanship, which also serves as one of its core values. Design-build, an approach that Gilbane Building Company implements across its teams company wide, supports the company’s delivery on quality within each project it touches.
Design-build leverages collaborative teaming environments to tackle and satisfy multiple parallel objectives within any given project. These objectives include not only quality but efficient use of funding, timely-decision making, as well as risk mitigation. This approach ensures that the integrity of each project, both from an aesthetic and functional point of view, are upheld.
Gilbane is a pioneer in integrating advanced technology into project management and construction services. The design-build process integrates technology such as virtual reality in order to provide a thorough analysis of the project’s aesthetic and functional design. It not only helps solidify the architectural design of the project, but also supports team collaboration, which maximizes efficiency while minimizing risk.
