Established in 1981, FPA is known primarily for its residential work, and specifically, for small houses which have received many awards and much publicity, including three Record Houses and two National AIA Housing Awards. Herein, the Tower House, also published in Architectural Record in 2001, is a good example. We include, later, Glade House, which won a National AIA Housing Award this year and is published in two new books on American architecture. Additional examples shown are two houses on the boards at our conservation development, Deerpath Farm: Zero Energy House and Eco-house. In addition, Phillips has designed a number of small residential outbuildings, three of which we include: Sawyer Studio, Peter’s Greenhouse and Garden, and Three Oaks Pool House/Pool. Two of the three, competing against buildings in all categories, have recently won Distinguished Building Awards from AIA Chicago.Other WorkPhillips’ larger projects have included new and converted loft buildings, commercial interiors, showrooms, horse stables, private clubs, multi-family housing, a sound studio for the recording artist Steve Albini, and work for Chicago’s famed Graceland Cemetery.Three projects, shown herein, Trueblood Performing Arts, Deerpath Farm, and Chicago Pavilions, are small in their categories, but larger in the context of Phillips’ residential work.Modular HousingPhillips is an Adjunct Professor at IIT in Chicago where he pursues his greatest passion: bringing modular housing to Chicago to meet its high demand for affordable housing. His Advanced Design Studio is working closely with Hi-Tech Housing in Bristol, Indiana to develop an affordable modular row house prototype for some of the twenty thousand available vacant parcels within the city limits. Phillips is working with developers in the United States and abroad on several single and multi-family modular housing developments. In the 90’s Phillips chaired an AIA Committee on Manufactured Housing and the Awards Task Force, both sub-committees of the Committee on Design.RecognitionAmong its many awards, FPA has won eight Distinguished Building Awards from AIA Chicago, three Record Houses Awards, two National AIA Housing Awards, a Grand Award from Residential Architect, and an American Architecture Award from the Chicago Athenaeum. Phillips was elected Fellow of the AIA (Category 1-Design) in 1996.Work of the firm has been extensively published in books and journals and exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago; the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation of Lisbon, Portugal; the Pacific Design Center of Los Angeles; and numerous venues in the United States.
