Modern is not a style, it has nothing to do with fashion. Early modern architecture reflected optimism, ideas of democratic renewal, a belief that we can build a world without war and poverty. Its form was the abstinence from the language of power that still dominates western building culture. "Modern" certainly does not mean "contemporary": it is an attitude and it is timeless. Its virtues of compassion and optimism are as needed as ever.
Modern architecture's job is to be useful. The better, more efficiently and elegantly this task is completed, the more inspiring and beautiful our buildings will be. And that is a big deal! Just reflect how much time we spend in and around buildings, and how this cumulative experience will affect us in our life time! Can there be any doubt that well designed and beautiful buildings are tremendously important?
