Raquel LaneriFARMM, the Facility for Architectural Research in Media and Mediation, is a McGill University School of Architecture research hub. It is a non-hierarchical umbrella organization that aims to unite researchers and students from within the School of Architecture with academic and professional researchers from around the world. FARMM includes an administrative and technical staff alongside state of the art networking, simulation & imaging, and fabrication infrastructure. FARMM occupies a unique position in the School of Architecture by providing a flexible platform upon which applied research as well as emerging technologies can be explored and developed. The FARMM community is interested in an interdisciplinary research approach that explores the cultural role, philosophical implications, and creative or poetic capacities of new technologies within design and design-related fields. FARMM seeks to develop, frame, and understand innovative approaches to design and to promote the adoption and use of new technologies for design in an ethical and thoughtful manner. We also aspire to provide world-class training environments for researchers and students alike.FARMM was created within the McGill School of Architecture in September of 2008 by founding Director, Michael Jemtrud, supported by a Canadian for Innovation grant. FARMM has since expanded its interdisciplinary relationships and infrastructure through the addition of state-of-the-art technologies and research agendas.
