ESHA is an architectural practice established in 2004 by three highly experienced architects, Neil Embleton, Peterjohn Smyth and Willie Harbinson, who had worked together in the Bristol office of Percy Thomas Partnership for more than twenty years. Whilst they do not have one house style, their approach is distinctive in that they seek in their designs to achieve harmony with context, emphasizing local identity and creating a sense of place, to meet an increasing demand from clients and the public for new buildings of character which sit comfortably within and enhance their surroundings. ESHA’s contextual approach is just one aspect of their flexible design service which responds to the circumstances of each commission; appropriateness and quality remaining the touchstone. The experience of the three principals covers a very wide range of work and building types, particularly urban design, housing, health, further education, offices and schools. Key projects include Synthetic Chemistry Laboratories for University of Bristol, PFI hospitals at Bishop Auckland and Wishaw, remodelling of the historic barracks at HMS Drake in Plymouth, student accommodation for Combined Universities in Cornwall and the Urban Village at Poundbury, Dorset. The practice’s current work includes a 223 home expansion to the village of Rhostyllen for The National Trust, a new town of 5,500 homes at Sherford, South Devon for Red Tree, a health centre, library and residential development in central Bristol for Chatsworth Homes, an 89 home village extension at Keelby, Lincolnshire for Lord Yarborough, replacement of existing care homes at the National Society for Epilepsy, Chalfont and a new mixed-use urban block in Yeovil for ZeroC (formerly Cornhill Estates). The practice is based at 36 King Street in the heart of Bristol, and has full technical, CAD and administrative support including up-to-date IT and reprographic equipment. Our staff includes four architects, two technicians and a financial administrator/office manager/secretary.
