This Design Uses Firewood and Fish-Scale Masonry to Celebrate Chinese Heritage

Nestled between a bamboo forest and a serene pond in Sichuan lies an architectural masterpiece that marries tradition with modern design.

Taking inspiration from Sichuan’s iconic dwellings, the structure uses light, flexible pierced wood and expansive roof eaves that ensure both ventilation and shelter. But what truly captivates is its façade: walls adorned with intricately woven bamboo, mud coatings and a foundation marked by striking red sandstone blocks.

This sandstone isn’t just any; it’s machine-cut into fish scale patterns, enhancing depth and texture. These, combined with firewood fragments of varied sizes, create a façade that tells stories of Sichuan’s mountains and crafts.

With an inner courtyard reminiscent of a rotating windmill and a division of spaces that ranges from tea rooms to book bars, the building stands as a testament to the delicate balance between simplicity, refinement and ingenious design.
