From Temporary to Timeless: This Design Critiques the Life Cycle of Show Gardens

Architizer Editors Architizer Editors

The Vortex by Atelier Scale is a low-budget and recyclable garden displayed at the 2021 Shenzhen Garden Show. While most garden materials are generally thrown out after the garden show, the landscape architects at Atelier Scale envisioned instead to reconsider the life cycle of a temporary garden by designing planter modules that could re-use plants after an exhibition.

Their design for the Vortex was composed of two spiral landform structures made of 220 prefabricated planters, resembling the waves above the sea. A gradient selection of white, pink, purple, and dark blue flora spread with the planters. Thanks to their innovative design, 90% of the plants and materials were preserved after the garden show and re-used elsewhere in the park.
