Slide Around This Playful Reimagining of an Old Gabled Brick Cottage

Architizer Editors Architizer Editors

Announced by a glass block that towers above the brick gable of the original structure, this residential conversion is anything but quiet and unassuming. This intervention by the celebrated Australian firm Austin Maynard Architects consciously layers the modern on top of the historic.

The new multi-level new home is playful and fun. As the architects explain, “Union is an example of people literally living on top of each other, and making that part of the joy of the house, rather than a problem.” Though the site might be narrow and space tight, the interior never feels cramped. Using hidden slopes, concealed steps, split levels and ramps, and bookcase walls that split apart, the standard residential formula of corridors and containers is subverted and blurred into a home that is fluid, flexible and fun.
