STAND-ALONE OFFICE BUILDING IN STRASBOURG
Characterised by its optimum surface to volume ratio, this planned timber construction measuring approx. 30 x 30 x 30 metres offers more than just energy – and therefore cost – savings. Appropriately named “CUBE”, it provides the right shape in the right place: at a crossroads. A stand-alone building, it both enhances its surrounding and catches the eye with its distinctive design and materials. Double rows of wooden pillars surround the building core, those at the front providing shade from the sun to the south, west and east.
The overall effect is one of delicacy and transparency, particularly at the corners. Wood sets the tone outside and in, where the space, laid out in a grid pattern, is modular and flexible. And “CUBE” has more to offer in terms of space than the run-of-the-mill office building. Most striking from the exterior is the large terrace – with a view of the Vosges – for staff, while on the ground floor a semi-public colonnade accentuates the entrance. Extremely simple in design, these open areas simply take the place of interior space between the front and rear rows of pillars.
