Text description provided by the architects.

This project consists of office space, a laboratory and a workshop, ranging in levels of complexity from basic tooling to advanced CNC prototyping and digital fabrication. The space is intended to be used as a “maker” and R & D facility as well as a demonstration space for Autodesk’s software.

Located in a shed building on Pier 9, the project was an opportunity to juxtapose the new technology of the workshop with the old-school industry of the waterfront. We chose a simple material palette, and used it in a contemporary way to create a distinction/tension between the new and old building fabric.

The base-building’s dramatic sense of scale was preserved by incorporating a series of double-height spaces and an elevated catwalk. Designed to conform to the Secretary of Interiors Standards for Rehabilitation of Historic Structures and LEED-Platinum Commercial Interiors (for the office space), we hope that we established a vision for how these old Pier structures might be repurposed, and how private use can assist in rehabilitating a part of our historic fabric that might otherwise be lost.

The Lundberg Design Shop fabricated the steel and cedar reception desk, as well as the swing conference table.

The following Autodesk products were used during the design and construction of the space: Autodesk® Revit Architecture®, Revit Structure®, AutoCAD Architecture®, AutoCAD MEP®, 3ds Max®, MEP Fabrication®, Inventor Fusion®, Sketchbook®, Instructables®, Recap®.
