Completed in June 2024, the Zhouzhuang Theater Façade Renovation reinterprets the cultural identity of one of China’s most renowned water towns. The project covers a façade area of 4,790㎡, transforming the existing unused complex into a civic landmark that mediates between tradition and modernity.
The design emphasizes adaptive reuse, weaving together the architectural scale of a large performance venue with the intimate character of Zhouzhuang’s historic streets and waterways. Through a carefully composed façade system, nuanced materiality, and integrated lighting, the theater becomes both a cultural stage and an urban interface—framing daily life while supporting large-scale performances.
Rather than replicating historic motifs, the project explores how contemporary design can resonate with local memory. The façade acts as a porous threshold: reflective at times, revealing at others, and always in dialogue with the rhythms of the town. This approach ensures the theater is not only a venue for staged productions, but also a living extension of Zhouzhuang’s collective cultural landscape.
