ORIGINAL STATE
The Zezilia Gallartzagoitia Street is located in the center of the town of Amorebieta-Etxano (Spain). It is an 18m wide pedestrian street that parallels the main street and it ends at a historical park, where the civic center is also located. Because of its prime location and heavy pedestrian flow, it has great potential in many regards.
The street's layout is characterized by one meter high garden pots that are displayed in front of the buildings' facades that line the street in the city center. This contributes to the division of the street into two parts, disrupting the natural pedestrian flow. In addition to this, the buildings along this street where the development takes place only possess entrance access on one side, so the symmetrical disposition of the street's layout doesn't attend to its actual needs. Also, the street's furthest section away from the town center hasn't achieved as much popularity as other pedestrian streets in town.
One of the problems of the street surface is that it gets slippery and the woodland lining the street is deciduous, giving an undesirable ambience in winter.
OBJECTIVE OF THE INTERVENTION
The goal of the intervention is basically to offer residents a rejuvenated area by creating new and interesting urban spaces, thanks to the installation of steel awnings that offer a fresh and modern environment.
Revitalizing the area and contemplating and increasing the potential of the urban space, in summer as well as in winter, for new uses such as festivals, fairs, etc.
For these purposes a covered area has been created as protection from the rain that allows dynamic activities in the street and redevelops the current street surface. The steel awnings create an integrated urban sequence where vegetation blends with the outdoor furniture, creating an area sheltered from the rain. Several protected and shaded areas have been created in the whole area of development, thanks to the newly planted evergreen trees and canopies.
DESCRIPTION OF THE INTERVENTION
The awnings have been made with steel and are structurally put together with 6x6m flat panels that hang from a horizontal beam that runs along the length of the space. They have been installed as a group of five and three steel awnings.
The grouping of the panels allows the creation of enough space to hold a large gathering of people. Because there is space between the panels, they don't project an intrusive image in the urban landscape.
The benches have been specifically designed according to the project, whose steel structure is accented with Elondo wood.
The illumination adapts to the different areas of the environment:
The steel awnings receive illumination from their supporting pilars, which act as reflectors by illuminating them from below, giving them a suspended effect.
The TOPA light fixtures from B.Lux are distributed in an asymetric way that combine with the woodland and outdoor furniture, creating new spaces with a unique character, resulting in a group of totems that are reminiscent of the Afangar style.
The new urban landscape is more integrated and aesthetically pleasing to the pedestrian.
The walkway consists of two types of paving stone. Granite gravel covers the length of the street and the other acts as an ¨urban carpet¨, reflecting the steel awnings and supporting the outdoor furniture.
The trees, Magnolia Grandiflora, are distributed in tree grids of different sizes in free form and asystematically.
