This installation art work floor has been constructed on the exact primeval sea level.
About ‘eight-hundred-thousand years ago to one-million years ago’ Sapporo City was actually covered by ocean where is called ‘Ishikari Low Land’ in the academically. This art work floor was constructed on Zero Meter Above Sea Level.
The passageway of the art work is about 600mm wide and is located about 2.1m above the museum floor. (The art work floor represents primeval sea level at the very place where this museum is located now) The total length is about 31 meters. Therefore these colonnades that support it is originally under sea water.
Basically a column size is 19mm x 44mm. This material seems so thin and unreliable, also unimaginable to be able to walk on the floor. Additionally the all material is scrap wood and scrap plywood. That is why, the way of structure design was experimental physical check & test each piece by artist’s hand. Because of it was impossible to decide like this permeability design by calculation. The floor is strong enough to hold up to ten people in a single line.
Visitors can envision the ocean about a million years ago while walking on it. This installation art work shows that the history of mankind is just a moment compared to Mother Earth.
