ZERKALO is the most celebrated film of soviet cinematography which was shot a decade after the Rossia Theatre was built. Besides the obvious reflectiveness of the glass facades of the new changed building the title also characterizes the change in the Russian society that is reflected in the development of the movie industry, just like the movie picks up on reflections about Russian history and society.First of all we recognized the importance of the project as a unique opportunity to redefine the prominence of the structure that made the theatre so different when it first opened in the 60s . The challenge was not only in developing a monumental shape that would serve as an anchor in a well-established urban fabric - but also refining the function to fit the modern requirements of the industry and cultural life of the city. Essentially to create a landmark - recognizable and well “brandable” structure (like Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Eifel Tower in Paris,….). The unique roofs of the building along with the stairs enclosed in a cone shape would be an intriguing and welcoming image, that would attract Muscovites and visitors while remaining an unforgettable image long after the visit. The transparency of the glass wall of the new façade would invite pedestrians in the park around the movie theatre to visit the building not only to watch a movie but also join the vibrant social life of it with a number of cafés and shops.Another aspect of the project is the rehabilitation of the theatre which should not only assure the establishment of a strong urban anchor but also upgrade the building safety, efficiency, and economic profitability. To achieve greater sustainability the 1000 sq. meter solar system is placed on the south-facing surface of the roof.
