INTRODUCTION
Z-Lounge is a cozy hangout space with coastal-Mediterranean ambience. A blue entryway with brightly lit signage leads to a music-filled stronghold for youngsters. It was a challenging task for architects to carve out an aesthetically planned space that could welcome maximum number of guests, quite cost effectively.
SPATIALLY
The lounge spreads across 750 sq. ft., thus offering very small space to design. Therefore, it was critical to exhibit thoughtful spatial management. Continuous sofa-seating style along wall periphery is chosen to achieve 40 covers. With projector screen as focus, such a peripheral organization saves on the space as well as the budget as sofas use wall for backrest. There are corner sofas, benches and railway-berth seats for couples. If required, the central seating can be separated into three individual sets. Height of central seating is kept low to give clear view of projector screen at back.
THEME
Interiors are done in coastal theme to create laid-back beach atmosphere. The colour scheme is blue-white with accents of terracotta. Rough lime- plastered walls in white set contrast with glossy deep blue walls. The material palette has been carefully crafted from natural finishes and textures such that the feel is fresh and chic in day and exudes its relaxing and soothing charm as the night sets in. Rustic furniture is done in shades of blue and white, quirky cushions and posters break the monotony. The envelope is completed with a serenading wavy ceiling. Low cost, recycled/ recyclable materials are employed. Wooden logs, old bottles, coloured glass and plastic baskets are used to create design elements.
LIGHT
Light plays a significant role in highlighting the character of any space. In Z-Lounge, the space is dimly-lit on regular nights. There are four types of lights which are used in different combinations to achieve different mood-lightings. For movie-watching, all but wall lights are turned off. For parties, light through coloured window glass is added. One hanging light throws light on wave-ceiling and center table. Remaining ceiling has dramatic light-shadow patterns emanating from basket lights. Posters are highlighted by custom-made liquor bottle wall-lights. During day, no artificial light is required as light seeps in through patterned coloured glass windows, creating a play of colourful shadows. Thus, every functional as well as design element is highlighted with thoughtfully allocated lighting. All the lights at Z-Lounge employ LEDs.
FURNITURE
In Z-Lounge, the design and the arrangement of furniture play a critical role. In here, the entire furniture is locally designed out of wooden planks and is hand-painted. The rustic metallic finish of tables is achieved by applying colours in layers and then scrapping off extra paint. The process is followed by gloss polishing so as to attain metallic finish and easy cleaning routine.
CEILING
The central wavy ceiling steals the show, creating depths to stare at. It is made in MDF, and fins are painted in shades from blue to white generating rhythmic effect of sea waves. Remaining ceiling is kept plain and is filled with shadow patterns from DIY plastic basket lights.
ACOUSTICS AND SOUND-PROOFING
Z-Lounge exudes the charm of youth and vibrance. Thus, it magnetizes the crowd that reflects the same character. Understanding the same, we incorporated various acoustic measures for good sound-quality and noise reduction. Acoustic panels are used for insulation and sound-proofing. Windows are made of sandwiched glass and double-louvered exhaust vents are used for insulation. The furniture, furnishings and the pockets between wave-ceiling absorb ambient noise.
INVOLVEMENT
The PAA team was involved in sourcing and production of various things at various stages of design. Everyone got their hands dirty, be it painting furniture or making lights, terrariums or to search local market for fishing hooks; all was done with intoxicating enthusiasm. It was a fun and learning exercise which resulted in completing the project in a month.
The project is highly appreciated for its ambience and is successfully bringing in guests who lounge from late afternoons up to late nights.
