Architecture shaped by wind and light—creating comfort in Iceland’s harsh, open landscape
Located in the flat, windswept landscape of southwest Iceland, Ytrivöllur is a one-story residence designed to combine functionality, hospitality, and resilience. The clients requested a spacious, accessible home with no design limitations beyond a single level. Responding to the harsh climate, the architecture introduces a distinctive geometry: 17 corners—25 including bay windows—creating sheltered outdoor spaces and enhancing privacy while maintaining openness to the surrounding nature.
The plan is organized into three main zones:
• Garage and daily entrance, ensuring practical connectivity.
• Central living core, featuring an open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area with generous ceiling height, expansive glazing, and a bay window framing views of Hekla.
• Private bedroom wing, including two large bedrooms and a master suite with en-suite bath and a bay window oriented toward Vestmannaeyjar.
Material selection emphasizes durability and low maintenance: larch cladding and timber windows with aluminum cladding ensure longevity in Iceland’s demanding conditions. With a rational construction cost and a form that transforms environmental challenges into architectural opportunities, Ytrivöllur exemplifies Nest Design’s approach to creating homes that are both inviting and enduring.
