Our project for a youth centre for the town of Liedekerke re-emerges and has recently acquired a second life. The program remains the same, only the site has changed. Located between two existing buildings, one for indoor swimming and the other for sports, the project complements these public functions and at the same time re-organizes the entire site.
The new building is set back on the site giving space to a public square. The front facade is tilted to one side creating a perspective towards the open fields behind. A vertical accent emphasizes that this is the new leisure area for the town of Liedekerke.
Four parallel thick walls form the structure of the building. Within the thickness of these walls we’re able to organize all storage and technical spaces. The remaining open space is divided into a series of distinct rooms. Starting at the square a large foyer links all the functions and connects the building to the existing sports building, behind the foyer are 2 cafés and a meeting room. In the heart of the building lies the main hall, a polyvalent space with 2 large windows, opening up to the surroundings and to the sports hall internally. Finally, 5 rooms are situated at the back for scouting activities.
The scheme allows multiple uses: spaces can be connected by opening large sliding doors or used separately without disturbing each other. Some interesting diagonal views run through the building and the site enhancing interaction between all the activities.
