Yokohamanoie is a house located in an overcrowded residential area with a difference of elevation, common in Yokohama city. The residential area, including the site, is surrounded by cliffs to the east and west, and the landscape is sloped, gradually descending to the north.
The west side of the building site is closely facing a concrete retaining wall with a height of 16 feet, and installation of windows on the west side would not be suitable because houses on the cliff are densely constructed side by side. However, the four seasons can be enjoyed through borrowed scenery, with various trees planted on the east side cliff. A terrace constructed at the southeast corner on the second floor secures daylighting. Furthermore, you can see views of the Landmark Tower upstairs toward the north.
The three-way road, located next to the building site, sloped downward in all three directions and had a difference in level with the site. For that reason, a semi-outdoor parking space was constructed at the northwest corner where the client could easily approach by car with a lower construction cost, discharging the soil volume at a minimum. The cantilever portion of more than 13 feet, also used as a roof for the parking space, is supported by the entire external wall in the west side.
A tatami mat (straw mat), located in a part of the living room on the second floor, is intentionally uplifted from the floor while one’s line of sight in a lie-down stance can be the same height as a person sitting down on a chair in the dining room. The underneath portion is then used for a large volume of underfloor storage.
Since “Yokohamanoie (House in Yokohama)” is equipped with a skylight for stairs and the bathroom, in addition to a large window facing south and a laterally-long window with the scenery of the Landmark Tower toward the north, everywhere in the house is brightly lit.
Despite of a location at an overcrowded residential area, the house provides a sense of brightness and openness by receiving light from various directions.
