Prototype, NYCThe Lab was approached to formulate a prototype concept for a new lounge located in NYC. The retail store would incorporate a café, health minded literature and health products. Different from the standard Vitamin Shop, this prototype will incorporate all three distinct sections into one fluid spatial condition. The process of locating these various programs and charting their crossings and overlaps was done with the use fo a 3-D matrix, a three dimensional space in a functional sense rather than a physical sense. On a formal level, the matrix notated how to deal with transparency, geometry, modularity, flows and site conditions. The prototype proposes an adaptable modular "kit of parts" system that can be combined in many possibilities according to the spatial needs. The lab produced this intensively coherent the "kit of parts" from the same profile in different scales and conditions. The prototype was tested in three typical NYC retail examples: the shotgun space, corner space and linear street frontage. The modular system would be mass produced off site.
