Yen My House by Atelier 12
Project Description:
Located approximately 13km Southeast of Hanoi's city center, Yen My house is situated in a village outside the Red river dyke. This area still preserves its agricultural village structure, characterized by lush green vegetable fields stretching along the riverbanks.
The project’s brief was to design a home for an elderly couple. After living for a long time in a cramped concrete apartment in the inner city, they wished to return to their ancestral land and embrace a slower, more peaceful way of life.
The house has a total construction area of 130 m2 on a 6 x 20 m plot. Due to the limited width of the site, creating a traditional horizontal layout with multiple bays was no longer feasible. Therefore, the functional spaces are arranged vertically while strictly maintaining the flexible spirit and spatial order of Northern Vietnamese housing, ensuring maximum convenience for the elderly.
Facing Southeast, the two-story house begins with a front garden setback. The veranda serves a familiar role as a rhythmic transition buffer between the interior and exterior, an indispensable spiritual element in tropical architecture. Daily living functions are fully arranged on the ground floor with symbolic partitions. The kitchen and dining area connect to the veranda, while the central living room features an atrium that draws in soft natural light from above. The bedroom is located at the rear, with the bathroom tucked to one side. This bedroom opens onto a backyard and a second garden, ensuring privacy and airiness. These ground floor spaces are highly adaptable, allowing for large gatherings or quiet corners while ensuring family members can always see and feel each other's presence.
The highlight of the ground floor is a wood burning fireplace. Positioned at the center, it is not only a gathering spot for the family in winter but also helps regulate indoor humidity during the damp spring weather and acts as a ventilation shaft in the summer.
A staircase combined with the atrium leads to the upper floor, where the altar is placed in a more tranquil open space in the middle. Behind it is an ensuite bedroom for visiting family members and grandchildren, while the front opens onto a spacious terrace with the third garden.
The structure consists of a reinforced concrete frame (columns and beams) and conventional brick walls. Certain beams and floor slabs were height adjusted to create a flat ceiling for the ground floor living area, raise the seating ledge on the upper floor veranda, and planters on the terrace. The front facade is recessed behind the veranda and opened to the maximum to catch the Southeast breeze.
Interior decoration is also a strong aesthetic defining element of the house. When cherished items are arranged and customized within the space, a sense of freshness emerges like gentle, vibrant breezes.
The house features three gardens arranged from the front yard to the backyard and up to the terrace, forming a miniature ecosystem that connects people with nature and the surrounding context. The fields will not exist for long, as the last generation of urban farmers gradually passes. Fortunately, the spirit of the countryside and village life still vividly exists today. This enduring presence serves as both the inspiration and the contextual foundation for Yen My House.
