This architectural endeavor navigates the complex interplay between the echoes of antiquity and the demands of contemporary design. Situated within the richly historic and architecturally endowed city of Yazd, our challenge extended beyond mere location; it was a harmonious fusion of tradition and the resilient adaptation to an arid, challenging climate.
In a deliberate departure from nostalgia, our approach sought not replication but reinterpretation. Delving deeply into the architectural fabric of the city and its constructions, we unearthed timeless notions integral to human habitation, transcending eras with profound significance.
Foremost among these notions is the perpetual interplay of solidity and space. The robust mass, fashioned from rammed earth, stands as a bastion, shielding and enduring against unwelcome forces. Yet, within this solidity, lie voids that beckon nature inward. A tapestry of courtyards, varied in scale and function, punctuates this mass. Every architectural facet plays a symphonic role, accentuating a compelling narrative - where the exterior is forbidding, the interior embodies sanctuary.
Our dialogue between solidity and void isn’t always direct; it necessitates intermediaries. These thresholds, in turn, evolve into spaces with distinct identities, reflecting climate nuances and societal hierarchies. While drawing from historical notions, these spatial arrangements are reimagined, bearing relevance in contemporary architecture.
At the heart of this narrative lies the bedroom, perched atop, crowned by a conical skylight, emblematic of our design ethos.
However, the project’s foundation encounters constraints imposed by municipal regulations, dictating a northern placement. This directive curtails the central courtyard, yet reframing the plot as a mass unveils the entrance as a void. Four voids emerge, chiseled from the solid mass, serving as sanctuaries shielded from external influences. Every facet of the design aligns with this fundamental concept.
The entrance serves as a shelter, segueing into the main void and courtyard, while a colonnade navigates alongside. The dining area adjoins the second courtyard, seamlessly linked to a discreet kitchen. Embracing Persian cultural nuances, we incorporate two kitchens: one for display, another for practical use. Privacy, redefined, finds solace in a kitchen open yet secluded within the courtyard's embrace. The private living room, nestled by water and overlooking the second and third courtyards, epitomizes the project's essence.
Spaces within the mass are demarcated by fluid objects, dynamic in their semblance, defining hierarchies while housing essential elements such as the kitchen and pool. These spaces, defined by movable elements, bask in the filtered light and breezes from the courtyards. Time-honored architectural facets like wind catchers and vividly hued windows stand as poignant responses to the harsh climate, harmonizing with the overall composition. The public living room, adorned by vibrant morning shadows, overlooks the main courtyard.
In our reinterpretation, key elements of Yazd's historical architecture—orsi (colorful lighting), Pirneshin (sitting area before entrance), semi-closed kitchens, and wind catchers—find renewed significance. It isn't a mere tribute to bygone ways of life, but an exploration of how they might seamlessly integrate with modern living. Hierarchy, natural light, water, wind-borne breezes, proportion, and the innate sense of protection are the byproducts of this reinterpretation, envisaging a contemporary lifestyle deeply rooted in the past's wisdom.
Furthermore, integral to our design ethos, we meticulously preserved the site's existing trees, guardians of history spanning countless decades. Their presence adds a profound dimension, infusing the project with the rich tapestry of time.
Our endeavor isn’t merely a structure; it's an ode to the past, a harmonious synthesis with the present, and a promise for the sustainable, culturally resonant future of Yazd.
