Project Description
The interior responds to the client’s brief for innovation, simplicity, and visual coherence. During base-build works a column was removed and a 500 mm-deep beam introduced. Rather than conceal it, we celebrated the beam as a continuous lighting spine that legibly separates social and private zones, and extends to mark the threshold between the closed kitchen and the open-plan living area.
Spatial definition is achieved without compromising openness: a disciplined grid of ceiling lines organises the plan, with their intersections locating the downlights. Given the modest ceiling height, vertical cues were used to lift the perceived proportions: fluted plasterboard behind the piano (keyed to the ceiling rhythm), vertical steel SHS fins in the TV surround (echoing the library frame), and large-format ceramic slabs to the outer wall of the WC (aligned with the TV frame).
Avoiding fashionable but non-native gestures such as decorative bars, we revived the traditional “book buffet” — historically a translucent bookcase-screen between formal and family rooms — and reinterpreted it as a suspended object. Paired with a pared-back island dining table, it reads with its own identity rather than as a mere divider, expressing a dialogue between tradition and modernity.
A black steel frame discreetly fixes to the upper and lower concrete beams to carry both the library and the island; secondary restraints are concealed within the plasterboard to heighten the sense of suspension. Ceramic infill panels within the frame create visual continuity and advance sustainability by upcycling offcuts from the TV surround and WC wall.
